War for the Planet of the Apes

The most beautiful & visually spectacular film of the year!

Yes, that's right. I'm calling it the most beautiful and visually spectacular film of the year. Not necessarily the best, it will be among one of the best I'm sure. Though, you have to see this film in the cinema. The darkness that surrounds you in the theatre adds to the feel of the film, especially during the first 40 minutes.

The third instalment of the reboot series sticks to the evolution of the apes. In other words, it's still before Charlton Heston's 1968 Planet of the Apes. With this years War for the Planet of the Apes, you follow the apes on their journey, with a mix of dialogue from Caesar and subtitles from the interaction with the other apes in the first 40 minutes. It's as if you're watching a wildlife program, as the visual effects are so realistic, you honestly believe that these apes are really acting.

Woody Harrelson plays The Colonel. They couldn't have casted anyone better to play the character you love to hate. Andy Serkis delivers once again with his Gollum-esq body language playing the lead character, Caesar.

Writer and Director, Matt Reeves, brings a beautiful story to life. On the journey you'll noticed historic references to the original films with the young girl who the apes discover on their journey, who is given the name 'Nova', but also Caesar's son who is called 'Cornelius'. Yes, Nova and Cornelius from the originals. All you needed was the Statue of Liberty being corroded by the sand, but perhaps that would have given it away too easily.

Reeves, in a way, has completed the full circle with the series, ending this film just years away from the start of the original Planet of the Apes.

If you have seen Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014) then you're really in for a treat. A definite must see as you will no doubt be blown away by the amazing CGI graphics, plus the storyline/character development is a tear jerker. 5/5 for me!
